Background story: Amex is revamping the fees and benefits for Amex Cobalt card. The new fee schedule and benefit program will take effect on 2021-08-16. Those who have Amex Cobalt card already will still enjoy the existing monthly fee until next anniversary, but the benefit will kick in on 2021-08-16. So it is optimal to apply for a card before that date.

Promotion details:
Earn 2,500 bonus Membership Rewards points per month when $500 or more is charge to the card monthly, which is 30,000 Membership Rewards points.
For some individuals (maybe in specific region or in specific browser), there will be an extra 20,000 Membership Rewards Select points if you spend $3000 within 3 months after receiving the card. See pic at bottom.
In total the potential Membership Rewards Select points might be 50,000 for the first year, which is at least equal to 500 Canadian dollars.
Membership Rewards points can be used to book travel through American Express Fixed Points Travel Program, transferred to Marriott Bonvoy program points, Hilton Honors program points, redeemed for Amex pre-paid gift cards or redeemed for statement credit. After 2021-08-16, Membership Rewards points earned on Amex Cobalt card will also be possible to transfer to Aeroplan or British Airway Avios at 1:1 ratio.
This card has a monthly fee of $10 now and it will be $12.99 if applied after 2021-08-16.
Main benefit of this card:
- 5X points on grocery purchases, eating out and food delivery (equiv. to at least 5% cashback ). But there is an annual cap of $30,000 spending calculated from the day of activating
- 3X points on streaming services
- 2X points on transit, gas and travel purchases
- 1X point on other purchases
- Mobile device insurance
- Comprehensive travel insurance, except that Trip Interruption/Cancellation is not included
