Promotion details:
Apply for an Amex personal platinum card and get up to 100,000 Member Rewards points (see pic below), which will be equivalent to at least CAD 1000. In order to get this 100,000 points, the following tasks need to be completed:
- Spend CAD 6,000 within first 3 months of card membership and get 80,000 points
- Spend any amount between 14th to 17th months of card membership and get 20,000 points, i.e. you will need to keep the card for a second year which means you will need to pay annual fee for second year
Although the annual fee seems hefty, but by taking advantage of this welcome bonus you can still pocket some gains after two years of holding this card. Here is the math:
- As mentioned above, the 100,000 points will be equivalent to CAD 1000 at least, if they are redeemed for statement credit, not to mention that the points can be converted to Aeroplan or other programs for maximum value
- The annual fee for two years will be CAD 699 each, which will be 699*2=1398.
- This Platinum card comes with a CAD 200 travel credit every year, so to reduce the annual fee, you can book a refundable travel through Amex travel and cancel the travel after scooping the $200 travel credits.
- So the gain is 1000-699-699+200+200=2 at least, not to mention that this Platinum card will provide you with elite status with multiple hotel brands and car rental companies.
- Plus, through out the year there will be offers from grocery stores, shopping malls popping up for this card. (see pic below, I got lots of credit from 2020-05 to 2021-05, which totally covered one annual fee)
